Maintenance of Stabilised Diabetic Cats

Maintenance of Stabilised Diabetic Cats

Therapy for a diabetic patient can be considered successful when the clinical signs of diabetes mellitus improve.

Routine checks

After the animal has been stabilized successfully, routine checks should be carried out every 3-6 months.

Careful monitoring and control during maintenance will help to limit the chronic problems associated with diabetes.

Blood glucose concentrations

The aim of therapy is not to produce a series of blood glucose concentrations that are within the reference range. The goal is produce a blood glucose curve that approaches the reference range but avoids potentially fatal hypoglycaemia, for example 5 - 14 mmol/l (90-252 mg/dl) for most of each 24 hour period.
