Complicated diabetes mellitus

These are cats with diabetes and one of the following complications:

Specific therapy to minimise complications should be initiated along with insulin therapy. Once the cat is stable treatment can continue as for uncomplicated diabetes.

Uncomplicated diabetes mellitus

Two types of diabetic cats can be categorized as uncomplicated:

Cats presented to their veterinary surgeon after their owner has noted the appearance of clinical signs without general deterioration. These cases are not usually emergencies, however prompt, diligent treatment will prevent the development of complications.

Cats, which after initial presentation with diabetic ketoacidosis or urinary tract infection and their successful treatment, are generally stable.
