Monitoring Clinical Signs
The clinical signs of diabetes
mellitus are the consequence of a cascade of events leading to glucosuria-induced
polyuria. If the blood glucose concentration can be kept below
the renal threshold glucosuria will be prevented and there will
be no polyuris or polydipsia. Water consumption less than
60 ml/kg/day usually indicates good diabetis control. Alered
appetite and failure to maintain anormal body weight may suggest
poor diabetic control.
Although clinical signs
are useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of canine and feline
diabetes, other laboratory tests are also necessary for diagnosis
of diabetes mellitus and the monitoring of treated diabetic pets.
