Stabilisation of the Diabetic Cat
As there is individual variation in the response to insulin,
an initial trial or stabilisation period is undertaken.
Complicated diabetes mellitus
These are cats with diabetes
and one of the following complications:
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Hyperglycaemic, hyperosmolar
syndrome
- Infections e.g. urinary tract infections
- Concomitant illness e.g. Hyperthyroidism
Specific therapy to minimise
complications should be initiated along with insulin therapy. Once
the cat is stable treatment can continue as for uncomplicated diabetes.
Uncomplicated diabetes mellitus
Two types of diabetic
cats can be categorized as uncomplicated:
Cats presented to their veterinary surgeon after their owner
has noted the appearance of clinical signs without general deterioration.
These cases are not usually emergencies, however prompt, diligent
treatment will prevent the development of complications.
Cats, which after initial presentation with diabetic ketoacidosis
or urinary tract infection and their successful treatment, are
generally stable.
